Does Cervidil have the same med as Cytotec?

Are these the same thing, except with the Cervidil being removable and Cytotec not? I was under the impression it was. I've never used Cytotec. I've only used the Cervidil or foley bulb. TIA!

Both are synthetic prostaglandins but Cervidil = dinoprostone and Cytotec = misoprostol.

If I'm not mistaken Cervidil doses are measured in mg, where as Cytotec is in mcg.

I am more often exposed to Cytotec, as we use it for PPH and for induction of fetal demises

We use both on my unit. My preference is cervadil though, if mom hyperstims we can pull it. Cytotec? Once you place it and it dissolves, it's in and there's nothing you can do to remove it. It's a good choice for IUFDs, I just don't like using it on live babies

We use cytotec/misoprostol for term inductions as well, though it drives me crazy.

Misoprostol is an E1 prostaglandin (and heaven help me, I can't remember what that means) and dinoprostone is an E2 prostaglandin. We use dinoprostone for cervical ripening, both in the cervidil form, and also in a 1 or 2 mg vag suppository form, called prostin.

I'd much rather use cervidil, you can't pull the others if you start seeing hyperstimulation.
