Does anyone attend Alfred State University? If so, are the professors willing to go that extra mile, or do they just leave you hanging to fend for yourself? Do you find the program extremely difficult? I know it's no cake walk and requires full dedication (as it should) I'm just wondering if it's going to be extremely difficult to manage nursing school and be a wife/mother? I'm already beginning to feel guilty for considering taking on this kind of stress/sacrifice for my family. I know that once it's all over it'll be worth it for the whole family. Did anyone else feel this guilty, or am I nuts LOL! Also, what is typically involved in a day of nursing school at Alfred? I know it's different everyday but I'm wondering what type of hours are involved in a week? Like M-F 8:30-4:30... I will probably be finding all this info out next week when I go meet with an admissions counselor, but like they say curiosity killed the cat LOL! Any insight would be wonderful!
Hello nevergonnagiveup! I am currently an LPN student. I have been accepted into Alfred State's Nursing program for the upcoming fall semester. I was notified I will receive credit for Nursing 1 but will have to challenge Nursing 2. I have already starting studying for the challenge exam. However, I am worried about passing the skills part. I don't know if my LPN program prepared me adequately for it. Do you remember what skills were on it? What should I study?
Help!

Hi phoenixlady2011,
You should receive a skills packet for Nursing 1 and 2 that explains in detail all the skills step by step and what is expected from you.
They randomly select 5 skills from the Nursing 1 and 2 skills packet as part of the challenge exam so what I received may not be the skills you get.
If you have not received the packet, go ahead and request it from the school's secretary, she can email it to you.
Let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck!
Hi nevergonnagiveup. I received a skills packet of information to study for the challenge exam. I do not think I can pass it since I never learned half of the skills. Do you have any advice? I'm getting major anxiety over this.
Don't get overwhelmed. I felt the same way when I saw the packet. You only get tested on 5 skills but they're randomly selected. I know the skills lab instructor that tested me has left but I've heard good things about the new one.
You are allowed to make some errors and still be successful. Just review the biggies (medication adminstartion IM, PO, SQ, dressing changes, Foley insertion, sterile field etc.)
Any other questions, feel free to ask.
I graduated from Alfred, we had over 100 in the freshman class and graduated around 30. But you know what, I don't think anyone failed their NCLEX!!! It is a tough program but I LOVED it! I was challenged, I learn much better when I am challenged. I don't have kids, but I worked full time at a local hospital (as a PCT) while I was in school. I found all the professors very willing to help, but you had to ask for it. I and a couple of other students had study group every sunday. Exams were always on mondays, and most quizzes were on Mondays, so this helped us by going over the previous week... if one of us didn't totally understand something, one or both of the others would be able to explain it. Skills labs were available during the week for practice if you needed it, and again, professors always found time to help when we asked for it.
Good nurses must be go getters (IMHO), and Alfred State Nursing curriculum gets you there.
Hello All! I just got accepted to Alfred and all of your comments have helped me to get an idea of the program. I was wondering , how much are the living costs? I have a car so transportation is not a problem..did you guys dorm or rent an apartment?

Well let me first say CONGRATULATIONS for testing out of Nursing 1 and 2, that's an accomplishment to be very proud of! Yes, it's true ASC nursing program is difficult but with hard work it's definitely doable. I graduated with a 3.8 and I'm very pleased with the education I received from ASC.
I know you have a lot of questions, so did I when I started. To start, the test can be difficult and tricky at times but of course again, if you study the material you should be fine. I still have all my notes and if you need help with studying and tips, I will gladly help you!
The thing that makes Alfred's program so challenging is the fact there is always something due. Clinical assignments can be tedious and time consuming in additional to studying for skills lab testing, quizzes and unit exams.
My experience with the faculty was awesome. The have a well known "Pay It Forward" concept and this was the main reason I was accepted to the program and for that I was truly grateful. I know people usually say nursing faculty don't care about their nursing students but this is NOT true at Alfred.
I know I may not have answered all your questions but feel free to reach out to me anytime. Congrats again and don't worry-YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
