Doctor Office Pay??

Published

Do you know in general (in your area) what the starting pay is at a Doctor's Office for an RN? I've applied to a few doctor's offices nearby, and I have an interview on Monday at one of them. They don't require experience. I haven't graduated yet... just 2 more weeks!! :)

Can you tell me what state you're in? I'm pretty sure I'll start out in the teens here, b/c the hospitals here start out at $18.90-$20/hr. I'm in SC.

yep probably will. I am in wisconsin

I can imagine it would be in the teens, especially if that's what hospitals start at. My area is the same way. I'd take about anything now, though, I've been graduated for two months and haven't even gotten a reply from a potential employer!

Good Luck!

I live in Triad area in NC. They start at $16 - $18/hr and that's if they even hire an RN for a doctor's office. They like Medical Assistants and LPNs because they can offer less to them and they do the exact same thing.

Hospitals here with no experience hire $20 - $21/hr.

I interviewed on Monday (I'm 38 weeks pregnant too!), and the interview went really well. She did most of the talking and I did ask several questions. She asked me like 3 times if it sounded like something I was interested in. Hours are mon-fri 0830-1730 (over 1 hr for lunch), and very occasionally I will have to work a Saturday from 9-12. They rotate staff for that, and then one of the weekdays would be a half day so I wouldn't go over my 40 hours. Everything sounded great to me, and the office is close to my house :)

She called me the next day offering me the position starting at $17/hr, and she told me just to keep in touch with her about graduation, NCLEX, and the baby. She said I could even start working before boards. Anyway, she said the job is there waiting for me and I was happy to accept the position.

Congratulations!!! That is a great schedule for a new Mommy! The pay is about right. You may not think it's much but it's worth having nights and pretty much weekends and holidays off. I am getting tired of overnight shifts!

However, once you settle in with the new job and the new baby, I highly recommend you still get a PRN job at a hospital so you can work at least 1 shift a month so that you retain your acute care and IV skills. I recently started working for another hospital and a few of the orientees were experienced RNs (20 - 30 years) but it was only Doctor's office experience and they could not get a full-time job at the hospital (they were both shocked at how little the office nurses make here so they were looking for better pay at the hospital but was just as shocked to realize how difficult it was to get a nursing job now). One of them actually had to pay the hospital for a refresher course because she did not have recent acute care experience even though she was an ICU nurse when she started out.

It's only my advice and I know it will be hard to get a PRN job without the proper experience but once you get working just ask your fellow nursing co-workers, most of them have PRN jobs on the side and may know someone and get you connected.

Good luck!

Thanks! And I totally agree and was thinking the same thing. But the PRN jobs here are a privilege, and they consider it to be part time.. like working 1-2 days a week. They said you have to work up to being able to just work here and there. So I don't know how I'll get a job like that. I can't even get a hospital to respond to my resume.. i applied to 5 of them. So annoying.. which is why I jumped on this job. I didn't like that I am not doing any acute care and practicing my important skills, and my instructor (one of my references) really wants me to work at a hospital b/c I am really good at those skills. It just sucks when they don't call you. Maybe later on I'll get a call.. .who knows.
