Do you work at a NY nursing home as a RN and love it? if so, which one?

Published

I passed the board a couple of weeks ago and I am anxious to find a job in the five boroughs. I have applied to a few hospitals and was thinking of applying to nursing homes as well. There are so many, so I was wondering if there are some RNs out there that absolutely love working at particular homes. Also, what is the starting pay for new grads? Any info will be appreciated. Thank you so much.

I do love it. Wouldnt trade it for anything.

I needed nights, I got nights, I needed Days, I got days, I needed good staff, I cultivated the staff. I can honestly say, I have gotten almost everything I needed during my almost 20 years here, and I am still goinng.

I can say also that administration works with good employees. There have been a few poor choices float through the walls here, but that is everywhere. And it is also a matter of opinion for what is a poor choice.

I have a great time coming to work, and am surrounded by alot of creative people.

Good luck in your search.

Thank you so much! I think I would enjoy working with the elderly but I am a little cautious because I k eep hearing that I should start my career at a hospital. It's good to know that you can work at a LTC and be happy at your job.

Do you know any good ones closer to the Bklyn area, that also have happy nurses?

I do not, unfortunately in my sheltered little Long Island life.

Private sector is a different world, so I cannot begin to put a happiness quotent on job satisfaction.

The reason I love this job so much is it is like working in a stepdown sometimes. I ran the respiratory unit, I was general med, I worked every shift, every unit, dementia included, so my vast and varied experience of 48* post op hip sx, recovery after abdominal surgery, PICC lines, IV's, CODES and all that... it all happens here too.

Havn't done a chest tube in 17 years, but I dont miss it either.

Family meetings, presentations, peer mentoring, consortiums, and on and on...

yep, Im satisfied.

That sounds great... I am going to fax my resume there- we'll see what happens.

Congrats on passing the NCLEX!!! :)

Apply to as many places as you can! I should warn you though: nursing homes rarely hire, and when they do, it's for experienced RNs only. They usually look for LPNs, mostly.

Good to know. It seems like everyone wants experienced RNs. I have been applying to a lot of places, but I have not heard anything. Staying hopeful that something will happen soon.
