Do vocational schools accept Stafford loans?

Published

I have been looking at a few vocational schools around Central Florida to get my LPN at. I am not eligible for Pell grants because I am 21, unmarried, no kids and my parents make too much money (but not enough surplus to pay for my tuition). So that means I have to get a loan if I want to pay for school. However, from what I have been reading on these vocational schools' websites (Lake Tech, Orlando Tech, etc.).. they don't accept federal Stafford loans? I really, really do not want to take out a private loan. I don't have enough credit and my parents cannot cosign for me because they filed for bankruptcy a few years ago. So if this is true it would put me in a pretty big pickle.

The tech school in WI that I attended accepted Stafford loans. I can't speak for the schools you are referencing.

Most tech schools will certify your existing loans (saying that you are attending a FT/PT program) but will not provide for new loans. I checked two schools associated with the local school board (Orlando Tech and McFatter Tech) and neither will provide Stafford loans.

Thanks for your replies. Unless I win the lottery or get hitched or pop out a kid (neither of which I plan on doing anytime soon!!), I guess the only way I'll be able to pay for nursing school will be with private loans. :(

try americare school of nursing in casselberry, the program is more expensive but I think they accept stafford loans because it is pretty expensive. thats where im going because im having the same problem. theres also Centura institute by edgewater and TICO by kissimee. those are the only ones i know of besides orlando tech. hope that helps!!

I am a prospective student and will start the lpn at Mac fatter. i know a stafford loan is not guarantee but you may still apply with them

boubi12,

I am a student at McFatter now. Trust me on this, there are no student loans (at all) at McFatter. If you already have existing loans, they will certify it -- meaning that they sign something so your lender can grant you a deferment on payment. Unless you qualify for Pell Grants or other forms of government assistance (like VA grants, unemployment tuition assistance, etc), there is nothing the financial aid office can do for you. I am in that boat, where I need loans and cannot get one through school. The only available alternative would be to obtain a private/commercial loan through credit cards, banks, etc.

So I keep hearing that technical schools (ones like Orlando Tech, Lake Tech, TECO, etc.) do not accept Stafford loans. Is it up to the individual institution or are all technical schools in FL the same in that aspect? I do not qualify for Pell grants as stated in my original post because I'm a dependent and my father's salary is too high according to the government  .. even though he does not make enough to really help me with tuition.

I really do not want to go to a private school to complete my LPN.. I do not want to spend $15k in tuition, when I will probably only make a little over double that in a year working as an LPN.

Hi intehflames,

I agree with you. Private school is suck. My sister is currently enrolled in one and it is located in Ft Lauderdale. The name of that private institution is Coral Ridge Training School. The price went from 18K last year to 22k this year.

Hi intehflames

The tuition is about 3000 for the full program. That is about 450 per term which is affordable. your chance for passing the NCLEX is more guarantee at a State institution than at a private school.

Hi Darklight,

Since you already started can you please tell me more about the school such as passing score, tests, clinical site. Are the exams difficult. My instructor is gonna be MS Alderman. Have you ever heard about her?

Thanks

Are you talking about a specific tech school around the Central FL area?

Lake Tech, TECO and Orlando Tech all run about $4-5k for their entire LPN programs. Not too bad.
