Do schools look at the type of volunteer service?

Published

Hello,

I'm wondering what counts as applicable volunteer service when applying to nursing schools. I'm currently volunteering at the nursery at the local hospital (feeding, changing diapers, making beds, creating hats for newborns). I've been trying to volunteer at the nurses unit on a regular floor so I can work with the general population instead of newborns, but they don't have need for volunteers during my schedule (since so many pre-nursing students already volunteer at that time).

Does it matter what kind of volunteer service I do?

What if it's not healthcare related, as in volunteering with a homeless shelter or soup kitchen?

Any kind of volunteering looks great. It shows you're taking the first step towards your career and helping others.
