Hello!
I am trying to get into nursing school and I was just reading all those scary ghost stories on here and some stories about dieing mothers and babies. See, my ultimate goal is to work in labor and delivery and OF COURSE I know sometimes babies die, but is that a common thing? The ghost stories thnig may sound silly, but is that a common thing too? Can anyone tell me what they love about thier job and how you get over some of the sad parts. Help out a future RN! thank you!

Sorry, never worked in Labor/Del. But have worked 7 years in
Psychiatric crisis intervention. By the nature of our work,
we lost a few patients to suicide. It was very hard on our team
as we had worked so long with these patients.
re: how do you get over the sad parts--
I would say having a strong spiritual base combined with keeping
your life in balance. Make sure you are well rounded and have
many outside interests. For example, I run to dance classes to
decompress.
Perhaps you could visit a hospital near you. You could ask if
one or more of the nurses could talk with you. You could
get a sense of what a day in the life of an Labor nurse would be.
Good luck on your nursing school plans!!!!!!!!!!!:balloons:

Yes, you'll deal with death. Yes, it will be hard. Yes, you will still love your job. You never stop feeling the heartache after losing a pt, but you do learn how to deal with it.

I work in L&D, but have worked other places beore. My favorite part of L&D is the opportunity to be a part of something, that for most people, is one of the happies times of their life. It is also rewarding to help new moms overcome some of the fear associated with childbirth. I feel that nursing as a whole is rewarding just because you are helping someone else, no matter what their helath issue is.
Thank you ALL for your help. I welcome any type of advice from other nurses, I just want to make sure I am totally prepared for whats ahead!
