Do I have a shot at nursing school?

Published

I want to know a few people's opinions on whether or not I have a decent shot at an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN). I am currently living in Boston and I will be graduating this May (Woohoo :)) with a degree in Exercise and Health Science. My GPA upon graduation, most likely, will be between a 3.36-3.4. I have yet to calculate my pre-req science GPA but I have received nothing lower than a B, although they are mostly A's or B+'s. I have little to no patient care experience (3 months) but have applied for volunteer work so hopefully this will strengthen my application. I am willing to travel out of state, although not ideal. Please share experiences, school options, or thoughts on whether these statistics could make me a candidate for a ABSN program.

It depends on the school. You will need to talk to the admissions officer for the schools you are looking at. Some will look at your cummulative GPA, others will look at a few classes. A science prereq GPA is not what is required at most schools. I see most BSN schools will look at a total GPA looking at everything. A ADN school which is most likely a community college will go off a points system. They will look at your Teas score and several classes. Mine looks a A&P I and II and Psych 101 and English 111. Also some schools require the HESI and not the Teas. So check with the schools you are looking at.

It really depends on the program and whether the program is impacted or not ( CA nursing school are the most impacted in the country I believe). The program I will be attending in the fall is a direct entry program. The requirements for entry were 1)3.2 GPA or above 2) AP I &II, micro, statistics. I do not have patient care experience. The program is 21 months and I will graduate with a MSN and will be able to be Clinical Nurse Leader.

It really just depends on the program, requirements, the caliber of applicants for a particular year, and the amount of spots available.
