Do you used the same guaic materials to guaic emesis that you would to guaic stool?

It is funny that you ask that because this came up a few weeks ago and we all thought it was a somewhat-humerous situation. Anyway, we weren't sure and used the materials for stool just for the heck of it. It came back positive. When we realized that we needed to send the emesis to the lab for a different test, that came back positive also. So, I guess it can work.

I was wondering because I always thought you used the same materials to guaic emesis too and when this guy had emesis the other day and I suspected it had blood in it, I guaiced it and it came back positive. I guess it does work. :nurse:

There are actually two different reagents that need to be used, one for poop, and one for drainage from an NG tube, or vomit.

One card is called the Hemocult, and the other is the Gastrocult. The little bottles that come with have different colors, as well.

Suzanne is correct, there are two different cards and reagents.

Unfortunately, most places do not carry Gastrocult.

Good luck!
