Do those back support braces work?

I was in a store today and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with those back support brace things? The ones that are usually black and you put it on when you want to...they are like 40 to 60 dollars usually.

Do they work? Can you use them to prevent back problems if you wear them? I would think they would be good for nursing since we do a lot of lifting, etc

I always wear mine at work. Nice back support, padded correctly, and has magnets in it.
