What happens when a DNI status pt gets intubated? I know they don't just pull it out but does anyone have experience with the ramifications after the fact?? Thanks

Happens frequently in the ER if we don't know the patient is a DNI. So, what we do is wait for family and then they decide what we should do. The actual extubation is done after morphine is given and the family/chaplain are present. However, we pretty much let the family decide. Some people change their minds about DNI AFTER they are intubated and then the family wants everything done.
