Disability Insurance for Travelers?

Published

Hi, I have looked at taking out private disability, but was dismayed at the exclusions/riders I would have on a private plan: had neck injury due to an MVA/whiplash. Strained my T-spine at work 3 years ago. Have had been treated for depression and migraines in the past.

In group disability offered at permanent positions, there are no exclusions/riders, at least not that I am aware of, and I am paying about $50/month for short and long term disability coverage combined.

What do travelers do for disability coverage? Do any travel companies offer group disability participation?

This is a big factor in my not travelling. I did one travel assignment, realized I did not have coverage, or that I had forgotten to even inquire about it prior to beginning travel, and felt very paranoid of injuring myself, and not being covered.

Any insight would be great, thank you!

Not an answer to the question asked, but if you were injured on the job, you are still covered by workers comp by that employer unless you took a settlement. Same goes for a new injury on the job, or an injury on the way to, or from work. So that covers medical expenses. You are perhaps referring to supplemental compensation for lost wages?

AFLAC may be what you are looking for. It is only available through employers as an added benefit, but once you have it, you can keep it privately after you left that employer.

I wasn't able to get Aflac prior, but I will call them again. I guess since I haven't found any travel companies that even offer group disability, I was wondering what others were doing? My guess is that some have individual disability policies, and some carry none. Are there any travel companies that even offer disability coverage? I found one that supposedly did, but all it was redirection to one of the major private disability companies.

But Aflac disability is not available directly to individuals in any case so your post is most misleading even without the commercialism.
