Direct Entry MSN program 2

Nursing Students Post Graduate

The old thread seems to be closed...either it was too long or I shouldn't have been dispensing exam tips...

So the new one is born...

Hello AlanG,

I'm a June 07 graduate of the MENP program and the nursing department is "not" necessarily representative of DePaul.

I'd been advised repeatedly by former graduates to go elsewhere but jumped in.

Right now I cannot say anything positive about it except you will get your MS and prepare to sit for NCLEX in 22 months.

Keep copies of EVERYTHING, as it is likely it may be lost; keep track of ALL timelines...good luck,

Gen

:thankya:Thanks Gen.

I haven't even started yet and already I can tell that organizational skill is not one of their strengths! I'll be sure and keep copies of everything, just in case.

It may be far from ideal but, as you say, it will allow me to get an MSN and then my RN. And then all sorts of possibilities await....

Hello again AlanG,

Something to keep in mind also is that the 'gatekeeper' person at the office, whom you are likely dealing a lot with...you know who... is not necessarily representative of the rest of the nursing department. You will discover that there is a little mini-self-appointent pair of gatekeepers to the department. It is not official and not even at the awareness of the person who heads the department either.

I am sure that with a little time and distance I will feel more fondly for those wonderful professors AND the Head of the department, (who really ARE wonderful people and encouraging Nurses and Mentors) than is my aversion to the self-appointed gatekeepers.

Good luck, enjoy and be wise,

Gen

Hi CEG!

Happy New Year!

I am applying to UIC in a couple days, and I wanted to ask you a question: in the application, there is a question about past creative activities. I do a lot of creative projects in my volunteering, but then there is a question asking to describe your volunteer activities. I wonder what they mean by creative activities in this case? Could you remember what you wrote or just give me some examples. I know it is silly, but I don't really get it...

Thank you so much! Good luck!

I am in the U of Illinois- chicago's program and I really like it. I agree with Gen that I wish we got a degree out of the RN portion, but I am happy with the program. I have had such a wide away of expriences, especially in community health. I am midwifery track and it is very highly ranked (for what that's worth). I love Chicago.

Hmm, it's been awhile. I remember listing college marching band, concert band, drama, projects I had worked on, intramural sports, cultural exchange type things. Then for volunteer activities I put the time I had spent volunteering at the hospital and clinic. I don't remember the application exactly but I think it gives you a chance to show that you have done a variety of activities. As an undergrad I wasn't really health professions- oriented but I was really active in a variety of things so that gave me a chance to show that I wasn't just sitting on the couch.

If you have ever done any projects with foriegn language or health promotion be sure to include those as the ability to speak another language is so valuable and of course patient education and health promotion are very important in the nursing field.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions. I am now digging into my masters and it goes great.

Thank you very much, CEG! The question is somehow confusing, so thanks again for the clarification. I am about to send my UIC application within a week. Glad everything is going well with you, and you like the master's part of the program. Which specialty you are in? Otherwise, how is the UIC program- organization, professors etc.

Enjoy your vacation!
