Difficult situation

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone! I'm in a difficult situation right now and am hoping you guys can give me some advice. I have tried contacting my advisor but was told that she has retired, and the new one has not emailed me back yet.

I'm currently a student at CSU Long Beach and am done with all my GE's. It has taken me this long to stick with a major and I am currently at 60 units, not including this upcoming semester that will put me at 72. I have a GPA of 3.051. :( Two semesters ago I was declared as pre-nursing. I finished most of my pre-reqs: English, Psych, Math, and got a B in Chemistry. However, I dropped Physio that semester.. Then, I changed my major- but have now realized that it was a poor decision. I am really behind, however I still wish to pursue nursing. I want to know if there is a way I could still do so and attain my BSN. CSULB has a policy that doesn't allow you to retake your pre-reqs, so I do not believe I have a chance at applying into the program anymore because I dropped physiology. I'm going to take microbiology this semester and finish up anatomy and physiology next semester.

I don't know if this is possible, but would I be able to transfer to a community college to take the last two science classes and then try to transfer back into a CSU/UC school and apply to its nursing program? I have a short amount of time to try to raise my GPA as much as I can and get better grades in my science courses. I know there is the option of going to a private/for-profit university like West Coast but I'm trying to look into any other options that will allow me to save money. I really don't want to finish school with 100k+ debt. :uhoh3:

Thanks for taking your time to read this.

Good day:

GPA's don't normally transfer; only the credits.

Thank you.

If only credits transfer and not GPA, would that mean my "W" from physiology won't count if I transferred to a CC? Is it a possibility to go from CSU --> CC --> back into CSULB? Thank you.

As long as you have all of the CSU/UC general ed transfer requirements satisfied you should be able to apply directly to nursing programs as a junior-level transfer once you have your nursing prereqs done. You're probably already aware of how competitive admissions are for traditional public BSN programs here in CA so it's important to do as well as you possibly can in those last few classes to raise your GPA (many CSU's seem to be admitting in the 3.7+ range) and do whatever else you can (health care work/volunteer experience, learn a second language etc.) to boost your application. It would probably be wise to apply to several universities of varying degrees of competitiveness and maybe look into community college ADN programs as well since you can always do a 1.5-2 year CSU RN-BSN bridge program once you have your license. That's the route I chose; bridge programs aren't quite a selective as the traditional route (not yet, anyway) and like you, graduating with minimal debt is a very high priority for me.

Good luck with whatever you decide on!

I would agree with looking into the ADN programs as well and apply to as many schools as you feasibly can. I wanted to get my BSN as I already have a bachelor's but knew it might not happen with my overall GPA so I applied to BSN and ADN schools in the entire state of WA. Thank goodness I did that because I only got into two schools in eastern WA, both ADN. Really make sure you do well in those last few classes you have to take as well.
