Dialysis nurse hours/shifts..

Published

I have read through some posts but they are general or older..and no one answered my last one  My question is basically..in an outpatient, for profit (not Davita or Frenious) dialysis center what can a nurse expect? I am confused by some of the postings..are dialysis nurses working 5 and 6 day/week? 12 and 16 hr days?? I am considering a job about an hour from me..this is all new territory as far as the kind of nursing experience I have..but I am in need of a job and a challenge..that being said, I do NOT want to work 5 and 6 days/week especially if the days are 12 hrs. I do know this position would be "opening" at 0500. I assumed that meant either 3 12 hr days, 4 10 hr days or 5 8 hr days but now I'm not sure after reading the posts...the only other offer I have had (there is a hiring freeze at our local hospital until May) is a LTC facility. I oriented for 2 days at, at least at this facility, realized FAST this was NOT for me.

Anyone???

Hi Marshall, most chronic dialysis centers have set hours of operation and staff also have set hours that they are expected to work. When I worked in chronics my hours were 5:30 am to 4pm 4 days a week with every other saturday. Know that I am in Acute Dialysis my hours are not as stable- and there are nights that I don't leave the hospital until 7 or 8 at night. You should contact the different dialysis units around you and see if they are hiring an RN :coollook:

THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING!!! I actually have an interview tomorrow so this gives me a better idea of what to expect..I am hesitant to go this route because there is sooo much negative posted on the board about dialysis but when I look closer it seems to be mostly related to two companies..I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow. I just can't handle long term care..Thank you again for answering!!

hi Marshall how's your interview went. What are the hours and did they ofer you a job.Good luck

I think it depends on the center & patient census. I currently work 3-10's supposed to be 12's. We are opening up Tue/Thur/Sat so schedule is changing. I was supposed to work 4 10's when we opened to 6 days a week. But now they are saying we are going to end even earlier & I am only getting 3 days...not sure what my shift is then 3-8's.

Thanks - I interviewed a few days ago. Have heard nothing since..they did have me take the drug test and are doing the background check so I'm hoping that's a good sign. I did email and ask the approximate time frame I would hear either way as I have several more interviews and another job offer..but so far they haven't answered my email. Hopefully I didn't p*** anyone off by asking a time frame of if I know the job will be offered..oh well..can't un send the email now :) Thanks for replying - your schedule is very similar to what they are talking about at this clinic

Hi did you ever get a job in dialysis?
