I am very interested in diabetes education, especially as a clinical educator in the hospital. Capella University offers a MSN in diabetes education, but also a 5 course graduate level for post bachelor nurses to get a certificate in diabetes education. The course do not give me a CDE but I would imagine, looking at the courses, that it would get really close to being able to take the test.

Is any of this worth the time/money or should I work with the CDEs I have contact with?

What would this certificate give you that the NCBDE mentorship program (Mentorship Program, Certification Info, Diabetes Education, Certification, Examination | NCBDE) would not? Do they provide a preceptor for the required hours needed to sit for the CDE exam? Or would you have to find your own?

The didactic content may very well be decent, but probably nothing beyond what some of the classic texts from Joslin, the ADA, and/or the AADE would provide for you. The books are not cheap but sometimes you can borrow. You can easily spend a few hundred on books, but nothing compared to the thousands in tuition this program would charge you.

I am not sure. That is why I am looking to see if it is worth it. My facility will pay the tuition, so that is not a huge issue. I have plenty of CDE that I can work with. It will also get me about 1/3 of the way through an MSN...

Just curious if you decided to go the route of Capella. I'm thinking about future plans and was looking into Capella's program as well.

I have to finish my BSN first (taking last class now) and then I need to get my ortho cert for my job to climb clinical ladder and teach the joint replacement pre-op classes. I have also been asked to chair a CPC committee. I am on the diabetes team for my unit.

I can basically start there anytime. I just have to decide if I really want to go back to school again. I am a little burned out.

In theory, I would love it, but I have no idea how much work be involved. Good news is that with my facility's tuition reimbursement, I could probably do it with very little cost to me.
