Hello and Welcome to allnurses.com

Good to have you with us and good to read of your interest in nursing and advanced practice nursing.

First, let me educate you on the types of advanced practice nursing (APN). There are four (4) levels of the APN:

  1. Nurse Practitioner (NP)
  2. Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
  3. Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
  4. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

When one decides to become an NP, there are several specialty areas such as:

  • WHNP (women's health nurse practitioner)
  • NNP (neonatal nurse practitioner)
  • PNP (pediatric nurse practitioner)
  • ANP (adult nurse practitioner)
  • ACNP (acute care nurse practitioner)
  • PMHNP (Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner)
  • FNP (Family Nurse Practitioner)

There are several other specialties as well.

An NP can practice in the field of dermatology. There are post-grad Fellowships that the NP can do in dermatology, but there is not a post-grad certification as an NP in dermatology (yet) as recognized by the two main certifying bodies, the ANCC or the AANP.

Hope this helps to answer some of your questions. If you have others, please post here.

And, hope you enjoy allnurses.com. Good luck with your nursing career plans.

You are very welcome.

Good luck.

My classmate and good friend is currently interning (on his own) at a derm practice. We will graduate in August and once he is certified as an FNP he will already be oriented to the practice and will work on his own. He says that going the FNP route was the best choice for him because the derm practice he is currently at sees all ages of patients. Just something to consider. :)

How can I find post grad NP fellowships?

Thanks!

We have a NP that visits our faclity that works in derm and wounds only. HTH
