I was just wondering what the schedule was like for 1st quarter? I am wanting to go in the Jan. ADN program.... I have been reading that this is the most hectic schedule out of all the quarters. The advisor told me to expect 8-5 everyday? Is this true? Just trying to get ahold on my schedule.... Thank You in advance for replys!!!

I'd be interesting in finding this out for the BSN schedule too. I am considering taking Patho before I get there, would it be a good idea?

TIA!

I can't speak for the ADN program but the BSN's first quarter for us (Jan 09) was Tues, Wed, Thurs. If you were in Patho it was Tues 10a-7p, Wed 9a-5p and Thurs 9a-4p. If you weren't it was Tues 1p-7p, Wed 9a-5p and Thurs 9a-11:30a. This quarter (second) is Mon 9a-3:30p, Tues 9a-2:30p, Thurs/Fri morning lab is 8-12 afternoon lab is 1-5.

I am in my final year at DSN (BSN group) and I can tell you each quarter is very different for each cohort (when it comes to schedules). My first quarter we had 3 full days of school, our second quarter we had school 5 days a week (1 full day and 4 half days), our third quarter was 3 days (1 full day and 2 half days) a week with most students having a clinical 2 days a week for half the quarter. Our fourth quarter has 2 full days of school and clinicals 3 days a week (1 12-hour shift for 8 weeks and 2 12-hour shifts for 5 weeks). I know this schedule is different from other groups that have gone before. I only want to caution you on "banking" on a certain schedule for school. Clinicals have been weekends and weekdays so you can end up with any day for clinicals! Let me know if you have any other questions, I am happy to help and let you know what it has been like!

Thank You so much for the replys.....

I am going to try an mainatin working one day a week at least..... But was just wondering if I can "Bank" on a day... Sounds like not! Have you been working while you are in school??

I work as a CNA at a hospital... i would like to maintain my job while I am in school so that I can have a little bit of a lead when I get out. I also work at a magnet hospital... So... i am really trying to keep on my schedule. I don not plan on wokring anywhere else..

Just wondering if you had any suggestions..

I have heard with the accredit... going on the school is bound to have waitlist.. Any news from inside ???

Thank you so much for your time...:wink2:

Yes, the schedule changes every quarter! I am in the first quarter of the BSN program and We have Health Assessment lecture and lab 8:30-2:30 monday (some people have school much later because the Lab groups are split into two and I have group A). Tues and Thurs we have Pathophys and Pharm from 9-3, and Wednesday we have topics of professional nursing 8:30-11:30. It is the first week and I already have a 5-10 page paper due wed, and our first patho exam is on thursday. The first quarter of the ADN program is only 3 days a week I think. Basically, because of the drastic changes each quarter you would need to have a job that gives you a VERY flexible schedule. That isn't even considering the massive amounts of homework and studying that you will need time for.

LuckyKellyK,

Is it all that you expected thus far? I anticipate ALOT of work... I actually am lucky enough to have a job that I can just work a flexible schedule. How are the instructors?

I am actually taking patho this summer... Hope that this will make my transition easier!!

Does it seem like it is more hectic b/c of accred.. now? I am really worried about a wait list now that they are doing Financial aid! I have pre-reqs that i am finishing, and wont be done until Dec... Hope it all works out!

Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule!!

Well, those were just two major things that stood out, but each class covers MINIMUM 6 chapters a week. Usually 8. And each chapter is many pages, so I left out the hundreds of pages of reading. It's only the first week so I am sure it will get more intense. Considering the fact that each quarter is only 11 weeks, it is a lot of work in a short amount of time. I really like all of my instructors. The whole faculty is very nice. You should check with the school to make sure that the summer patho class that you are taking is sufficient. Patho at DSN is 5 units (at least for the BSN program it is), so if your class does not have as many credits you will have to take it again anyways. A lot of people have run into that problem. It seems to me like the cohorts are filling up faster than when I enrolled. There's not a waiting list yet, but they will only enroll people so far in advance. I am sure there will be a wait list soon. I hope that helps!
