Dementia is a permanent state caused by such illnesses as Alzheimers disease and stroke.
Delerium is an elderly body's response to illness and is not a permanent state. It needs to be dealt with immediately and tests need to be run to determine the cause. It can be cause by a response to medication and infection.
Delerium usually has a sudden onset, while Dementia develops gradually.
