which degree? msn or ms?

Published

I have accepted a place in the CAMC school in Charleston, WV/marshall, which offers a MS degree, and now I have found out I have the option of going to a school which offers the MSN. What should I do? I really want to go to CAMC. Is there really any reason to get the MSN? I have no desire to teach (ever) and I felt a lot of my classes for the BSN were truly BS. Any advice? I need to make my final decision soon!

I also applied and hope to go to camc and received a letter that told me my application will be held over. I was and still am so depressed. I got turned down at trover/murray state after my interview and now also cinncinnati. What am I doing wrong??? I received interviews at all three and felt they went well but now I dont know. My favorite school was CAMC... I really want to go there.. any suggestions on how to improve my chances before feb. 3 when they meet again.. any help would be appreciated...dying to go to school..

I went and got an MS(A). That is an administrative degree, but I wanted to get into the corporate world, not the nursing world. I didn't want to limit my options by having only a nursing degree. So, based on what you think you want to do, you may not need an MSN. Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice, because I am academically oriented and also strongly clinically oriented, but I am still practicing in a SICU and also have a corporate job whiich is different and which I love. So think about what your future goals are.

I think if you are going to the anesthesia school that fits you best and that you like, then that's all that matters. In the end, you will be a CRNA no matter what degree goes with it.

I was told that I will not be recognized as an "advanced practice nurse" without the MSN degree. What does that really mean? Does that lower my salary as a CRNA or make me less marketable as a CRNA? I really want to go to the CAMC program, and feel glad to be accepted, but I want to make the best desision. I feel lucky to get a choice of programs only having one year of ICU experience, but 10 years of nursing (including 8 years of OR). I don't know what advice to give the person who is on the wait list. I've never applied before this year. What are your GRE scores? Mine were high according to the schools where I interviewed since all 3 so far mentioned them.

re: not recognized as advanced practice nurse....

that is nonsense...and if some state does not recognize you as an advanced practice nurse after completion of an accredited ms program in nurse anesthesia... then they need to seriously reevaluate who is on their nursing commission.

in Washington you are licsenced as an ARNP with a certain specifier in front of your liscense to provide prescriptive authority for anesthesia. I am sure many states...if not all of them do the same.

that makes me feel better about the MS degree. thanks!

CRNA are the letters that matter more than MSN or MS. Good luck at CAMC. I hope to go there one day myself.
