Degree of Autonomy

Hello! I am writing a paper on medical/surgical nursing and am unable to find information on the degree of autonomy for this specialty. I was wondering if someone could tell me how free you are to work on your own...of if there really isn't much autonomy is this specialty.

I was also wondering what other members of the health care team do you all collaborate with closely?

Thank you for any help you can give! I am a nursing student and picked med/surg nursing as my topic for this paper because I am interested in this specialty. It is pretty hard to research some of this stuff :)
