Deciding what school.. Is this a no brainer?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Ok everyone I'm desperate for some advice!

I'm currently a student at my local university. I've been working on pre-reqs consistently for 3 years.. AHH! This is do to me starting out fresh from high school and not knowing what I wanted to major in.

So I figured it out and I want to be a nurse! Whoot! Well I finally managed to complete all of my pre-regs and I'm 22 ( I know I know I'm still so young but the fact I should be graduating this coming year just grates my nerves) Anyways... I was admitted into my university's program this fall! YAY! But.. Even though I have everything but nursing classes done I STILL have 3 years left due to how they space their courses ahhh.. I'm just so ready to be done at this point.

I have also applied to a BSN program that is a hospital based one (Both are BSN) and it will only take me two years.. but... They just called and informed me that my acceptance is based on completing four MORE classes this summer.. OMG! I was looking forward to having my summer off and paying off my car and whatnot. It just really gets me because I have taken similar classes but they weren't the "right" ones. I want to die lol

So would you stress yourself out and take 4 classes this summer to end 10 months prior to a university that you're already extremely comfortable with? IDK!

I guess I should mention the hospital based school is about 10k more than the university in total and about 2x the drive amount.. lol I know I know why am I even debating it. But I just want to be done and be able to finally get a house with my boyfriend and not be 25 living at home..

Thanks for letting me rant! Sorry for the long winded post.. I know I should just attend the university and not stress myself out but what would you do in my situation?

If money is a problem I would stay at your current school, because you also have to figure in gas money. But if you go to the hospital based school even though you would be paying more money, you would have 10 months of a higher paying nursing job, which you wouldn't have made that 10 months worth of money by being in school, so it might equal its self out money wise. But money is not the only factor. What are the schools NCLEX pass rates? Because, by looking at these you can determine if it is a good teaching school. Because if one school has very low pass rates something is wrong with the teaching. Also I would go on rate my proffesor.com and look up nursing professors from each school, and see which school has the better teachers. Also look up your clinical sites. Because if you have to drive 2x as far for classes, you may have to end up driving 4x as far for clinicals at 5 in the morning. I feel like this was sort of scatterbrained, but I hope this helps. I know its a tough decision, but I hope this helped you out. Good Luck!

I agree, definitely compare the NCLEX pass rates. I honestly think you should stick with the university you are at, especially if you are comfortable with it. From reading your post, you sound a little burned-out (I don't blame you!) and going straight through the summer with 4 courses and then starting an intensive nursing program?? That will be extremely tough. Nursing school is hard enough as it is, why not give yourself the summer to save up some money and take a BREAK before you put yourself through the rigorous curriculum? Also, think about how nice it will be not to have to drive far away, the extra sleep in the morning will be worth it. And lastly, 10,000 dollars might not sound like a lot when you are comparing it to the total cost of a program but it is STILL 10,000 dollars!

I am honestly in the same boat and would love to graduate and move out ASAP but we have the rest of our lives to be living in our own place, what's another tiny year if it means a lot less stress? =)

oh and most importantly, congrats on getting into 2 programs!!

Thanks for the comments :) I am so burned out right now but I know I just have to keep going and finish. The nclex pass rates are both very high. Both schools are very reputable in my community. I'm in a hospital city.. There are at least 6 major hospitals within 45 minutes so both schools use the same ones as clinical sites. I think I'm just going to relax and not stress and stay where I am. I guess this is God's way of telling me to stay put lol!
