I have been working as an On Call night nurse for about a month and a half. We are just a couple weeks into the new 7 on and 7 off and I love the schedule. One thing that the more experienced night nurse advised was to follow up on calls from the previous night to see what the day shift did to respond or fix... while doctors awake, etc.
What do you do when the day shift nurses don't follow up? Or follow up with only phone calls and don't go assess patients who have had major changes in condition? It is too bizarre. Or follow up with a phone call and say the night shift will be contacted if things get suddenly much worse? I am in a rural area that has limited everything during the weekend, and even more so at night.
I haven't been doing the job long enough to identify a clear trend... but there are two weekend nurses that it seems don't leave their chair/home office/etc. if they don't have to. Calling them visit nurses is a joke. They make phone calls for 3 hours in the morning and are done for the day but take 8 hours of pay. Cushy when you can get it!
