3 Day Phlebotomy Courses - Are they legit?

Published

I'm currently taking prereqs for my associates in nursing and was thinking of getting some kind of job in a clinical setting while I wait to finish my degree that way I can have more experience, so I'm considering phlebotomy. I've been seeing these little signs around my town advertising 3 day phlebotomy courses and certification with a phone number or site. But 3 days seems pretty short to me, how would you even learn anything in that short period of time? It is legit or a scam? Should I just enroll in the 8 week phleb course at my college?

That sounds like something that might be useful for people already working in a clinical setting who want to pad their resumes with "official" knowledge.

Yes, that sounds like some sort of continuing education course or refresher for those who have some experience. The phlebotomy training course that my community college offers is 170 hours (lecture and clinical components).

There are intense semester-long phlebotomy programs and there are 2 day certification classes. Having a great instructor makes a difference, but honestly, what will make you a great phlebotomist is experience. If you can find a program with an internship or externship where you will be working under phlebotomists in a hospital getting real experience, you will not only be able to practice drawing blood on real patients, but get a foot in the door to the hospital environment where you will get your best experience and hone your skills.
