a day in the life of an AF nurse

Published

Hi all,

I am in the final stages of applying to the AF nursing corp, have my physical and chief nurse interview in 2 weeks. I have been an ICU nurse for over a year.

My question is, what is a work day like in the AF? I put in Lackland as my #1 choice, with Landstuhl 2nd and Travis 3rd. How many hours a week do you work? Are they 12 hour shifts? From when to when? My wife is worried that once I join that I'll be working 60 hour weeks with little to no time off, and so I'm just trying to find out from actual AF nurse what it's going to be like.

Thanks.

The hours are typical of most civilian ICU nursing: 12hr shifts work every other weekend etc., as a junior nurse you usually won't have that many big extra duties that require a lot of time outside of work. You should get to visit with several nurses on your interview with chief nurse. They should be able to most of your questions.
