I will be starting a cardiovascular unit very soon. Is there any resources that I could be looking at now to assist with this transition? I have worked 5 years on a trauma/stepdown floor, so primary focus on the cardiac system will be totally different for me. Any help or advice would be great...thanks

I assume you have an extensive orientation once you start? This should include both theory-type instruction as well as bedside practice to augment your learning.

Depending on your experience so far, I would recommend reviewing ECG rhythms. You can do this on your own and be challenged while away from the bedside. You could also begin reviewing drugs used to treat various dysrhythmias (bolus doses, drip management, pharm, etc), but this should be taught in your orientation.

Otherwise, really your best resources for learning are your patients. I think your best learning will occur at the bedside when you're most challenged (appropriately and safely). Your preceptors, mentors, and charge nurses will be the best people to direct your clinical learning.

Buy "Perioperative care in cardiac surgery" by Robert Bojar. It tells you everything you need to know. Its by far the best book Ive ever read.
