I was recently accepted to the Fall 2010 RN program at Catawba Valley Community College . I haven't seen many threads pertaining to their program and/or curriculum. Has anyone else been accepted to CVCC for Fall 2010 or are current students. If you are a current student, how is the program:down:? Do you know anyone who attends or has attended CVCC's nursing program? Thanks in advance!!!

Hi there! I didn't mean to scare you with my post, but to honest if I had to do all over again I don't know if I would have chosen CVCC, but then again the grass isn't always greener on the other side. There is BS no matter where you go. I hope they have a more clear picture with your class. I don't want to discourage you AT ALL. My take on all the BS is that no matter what they put me through I am NOT quitting, they will have to throw me out kicking and screaming. I have a previous 4 year degree and nursing school has been the hardest thing I have EVER encountored. I have had to learn that making an 80 is OK and not the end of the world C=RN. I have to tell myself on almost a weekly basis that this nightmare will be over soon and that school is just a step in becoming an RN, and that school is nothing like being a nurse.
I do hope they get it together before our class comes in. It is my purpose to be a nurse and I refuse for BS to stand in my way. I did read that CVCC has a mentor program where the 2nd year student mentors the 1st year student....so hopefully that will be some help. Thank you so much for replying. I guess I will see you around campus eventually although I have no clue who you are yet...lol.
They are working hard to get all the kinks out. I'm not sure how the mentor "big brother/sister" thing will go being that there are almost twice as many new students as there are in my class. I think it may be best that this stay annonymous because this forum may be monitored and identifying ourselves could have negative effects. Good luck in school, you just have to remember it is ALL worth it in the end!
I totally understand I would have PM'd it before putting either of our names on allnurses forum...lol. Thanks again for your help and input. I am very glad that they are working on getting everything in order for our class.

I graduated from CVCC last May as part of the Class of 2010. Mine was the last class before they changed over to the state mandated new curriculum that relies less on lecture, and more on independent student projects. I heard plenty of complaints from the class immediately following mine that things were confusing--as one might expect. Hopefully that is all worked out before your class begins.
The important thing is the hang tough. I believe the CVCC faculty want each student to be successful. But another factor is the school has suffered some of the worse NCLEX passing rates in the state the past few years. Some of that may be due to changes in their RN program's administration, but they are likely to be more aggressive and quick to weed-out students who are falling behind than they were in prevous years.
NOTE: I just noted the passing rate for CVCC in 2010: 73 percent (slightly more than 1-in-4 students failed on the first attempt). My view is that CVCC isn't a bad school, but they do a poor job of differentiating between the "real" and "NCLEX" world--denying one will fail you, acknowledging the other will make you very happy. Take a GOOD NCLEX prep course!
