Just curious on how supportive your management is when it comes to pts/families behavoirs. We recently had an incident where one of our NICU nurses purse got stolen. Her keys to her new car with keyless entry were in it and the baby's family member STOLE her car! ( Just a bit of information, to enter our NICU you have to come through L&D which is a locked unit then go to locked NICU which during night shift only the 2 people, one of which is always the baby's mom, that have the matching hospital bands are allowed into the locked NICU to visit. We have no lockers and our break room is unlocked and easily accessable.) Managements reaction was that she should have had her purse more secure! They also wanted intervention kept to a minimum to avoid bad PR. This nurse saved this family's baby and they stole her purse, wallet, credit cards, and CAR! ( we have good idea who it was as the sift was only an hour old and of the 3 families, 2 were still there when it was discovered missing however we didn'y physically see them leave with it. They had been nasty and insulting to the staff the whole stay but they didn't want to be accusitory towards the family.) Anyone had something similar at their facility?:angryfire

Did I miss something here: did she call the POLICE????? Not only are valuables involved, but her identity is now at risk for theft and her safety/security may be at risk as well! This could reverberate for YEARS in her life....(my sister had her identity stolen and it took 2 years to fix the mess that created)......
I am sorry, but from her standpoint I would be thinking, who CARES about "customer relations"? Really, this is a crime! It should be reported and if the perps caught, prosecuted to the normal extent of law. Simple as that.
I am sorry for that person. I guess you all learned you have no choice but to somehow find a more secure way to keep your valuables. This stinks! People simply can't be trusted. If they (your employers) do not provide you a more secure means of locking things up, elevate this til someone does something about it. Bad PR should not be their concern at this point.
This all really annoys me, no concern for employee wellbeing/security, just their own PR. UGH.
yes, immediately and had them come to the unit to file the report.
good. well you all need to press for and demand a means to secure your valuables. Go up the chain and if they still keep this attitude, write an editorial for your local newspaper (anonymous if you choose). SOMEthing to shed light on their lousy attitude regarding your security and safety is in order.

Is there any kind of security camera? We have cameras on out unit, in the hall, at the elevators, and at all entry points of the unit. They are not in the rooms. The crime was probably not caught on tape, but this would make it easier to track who came and went during the time the purse was stolen.
We have a locker room, but some nurses keep their purses at the desk in a drawer. I could see how it would be very easy for a staff member, not a pt family, to take one of these purses at the nurses station. That is why mine is in the locked locker room in my locked locker! I have had my purse stolen and it is very upsetting and expensive to get things back in order.
