Hey Everyone!
I'm Kate. I'm a 25 year old new Associate's Degree Registered Nurse from NJ. I previously worked on an ortho/surgical floor at my local hospital as a nursing assistant/unit secretary for 5 years. When I passed my boards in May they did not have any RN openings for me at the time. I found a job in August at a Urology Office Based Surgery Center. Basically I run office hours, do minor anesthesia procedures such as cystos, prostate biopsies, and lasers and work in the recovery room here. While I am extremely grateful and lucky to have my job I am only happy to an extent here. The people I work with are nice and aside from the typical politics(which you'll find anywhere) the job is okay. However, I just don't feel right here. I liked the hospital and having a bunch of patients and being busy all day but also having the time to get to know each of them. I guess the pace here is much slower and I just miss the hospital style nursing. I have only been here for 6 months so I don't think its a good idea for me to leave just yet but I was wondering if anyone else felt this way at their first nursing job and how long is the right amount of time to wait before moving on to the next place?
Other factors in this are that I plan on enrolling for one class at a time starting in the fall for my bachelor's degree, I am a single mom of a 5 year old and I did just get my new benefits through here a few months ago, right now my commute is about an hour(more if the traffic is extra bad that day) to and from work, and like I said I just don't feel as happy as I did as a nursing assistant at the hospital. Any thoughts? Advice? etc? Thanks!

I left my first nursing job after almost 3 months. It wasn't the right job for me and I knew it when I took the job, but money speaks LOUDLY when you need it. I never stopped applying and interviewing throughout the entire time I worked. I accepted the new job, put in 2 weeks notice, and after completing that, I started the new job after a weekends break. I have always heard that you should give it a year, but if you are unhappy, you aren't going to stay for the long haul anyway. Good luck! Hope that helps!
