Long story short... I originally went to a community college for my ASN Nursing degree right from high school. I messed up a bit and didn't do well in my classes. Got a few C's and even got some F's for not dropping a class in time. I knew I would never get into their nursing program so I switched to an LPN program in another town and just graduated last month.
I'm about to start my job as an LPN and I'm trying to go back for my RN at the community college I originally started at. My question is about retaking classes. If I were to retake a class that I made a C in and get an A, would the A be calculated into my mandatory pre-req classes only? I know they will look into my overall GPA, but wondering which grade will be calculated into my nursing prereq GPA?
Any help would be appreciated!

At my school, yes you can retake a class and use the last grade. It depends on the school. Look in your college catalog and it should give you that info. If it's a nursing class, my school doesn't let you retake unless you're in the program. But, for the A&P and Psy, you can.

Same with me... only the highest grade counts... you can get credit for taking the class 2 times, so you only get one grade. That will usually be the one that transfers as well. Good luck :)

Some schools insist on using the best grade is counted toward your GPA others say the most recently completed (hopefully these are the same) and some schools limit the number of retakes you can do, so your best bet is to check with the individual school you are hoping to go to for their specific policy. I myself was not able to drop microbiology and ended up with an F, because of family issues that required me to travel out of state, losts of emotional distress, etc. Retook it and suffered no ill effect still got accepted to two bridge programs the first time I applied.

As the other posters have said, it depends on the school. I had to retake several classes from what I call my "past life" and those grades were dropped from my record entirely.
Also, try to see if they have a policy similar to my school's "Freshman Forgiveness" program. I had a few F's in classes that I had no interest in re-taking, but since I had been out of school for some time and then came back and got good grades for 12 credit hours, they wrote off the bad grades for those classes.
