Current CT Community College RN Students Advice For Newly Accepted

U.S.A. Connecticut

Published

Hello! Current or previous students who have experience in the CT Community Colleges RN program! I am starting this thread looking for advice you can give all of us newly accepted students who will start our first semester as nursing students in the fall! Are there things you wish you knew before you went to orientation? How much money should we save up? What expenses will we incur? What "insider" bits of information have you learned, that you wish you knew on your first day? In particular are there any things we can get out of the way or take care of while we await our semester to begin? For example get a physical, CPR cert, stock up on whatever color scrubs we need? Start the search for all-white shoes? Please share your suggestions, thoughts, ideas, and advice! Thank you in advance to all those who will contribute! WE THANK YOU!:D

Looks like I will be wearing long sleeves, and removing some steel ;-)

Does anyone know what Gateway wears?

Hi everyone,

I posted this on the other thread as well.

I went and registered for Nursing 101 today at Capital. What you need to bring with you is proof that you completed AP2 and your final grade. They will NOT enroll you until you have that done. You have until orientation to register, which for Capital is June 7th. If you do not register before June 7th, you seat will be forfeited. They will also ask for proof that you are registered for Microbiology or have already taken it. They also want you general psych requirement which they should be able to pull up from your transcripts you had sent in already. Also, make sure you have completed your FAFSA and have gotten your award letter from your school already. If you are unsure if you have received that yet, it will be on your mycommnet under the financial aid tab. If your FAFSA has not yet been received by the school you will have to pay registration fees when you register, just a heads up.

Spachild had posted some info earlier regarding Capital, and I think her responses from the school came right from an FAQ handout I picked up today. She covered most of the important details regarding the nursing program and class schedules. there was one question on here that may help clarify our inability to choose our clinical. Q: "DOES A STUDENT SELECT CLINICAL SCHEDULES? A: NO. The clinical assignments are made by the course leader of the particular semester.

Also this FAQ hand out recommends not working more then 20-24 hours a week to accommodate classes and adequate time for studying... That would feel like being on vacation!

I hope this helps some of you!

The bulk of texts are bought in the first semester, and yes, nearly all of them will be revisited throughout the program. Second semester has pedi and maternity content, Third has critical care. Fourth, a large psych component, the book you will have bought in the first semester. Your mainstay text will be Brunner and Suddarth. Wisdom that I can impart, keep your personal lives to yourselves, be cautious what you share with whom. Get NCLEX guides from Saunders, Brunner, and Kaplan. Practice questions like mad. dont work more that 2-3 days a week, and for God's sake, dont try to do co requisites during nursing school! Take micro by itself, especially at TRCC!

I just signed up for the CPR class at Capital, I was to late for the one on the first :( Is anyone else taking it on the 16th?

Besides Capital where else are there healthcare provider cpr courses offered??

Hospitals teach BLS classes

So I went to register for nursing classes today at NCC.:nurse: I was so excited! The professor who will be teaching the fundamentals course was an absolute doll:)...And then I went downstairs to records...talk about taking the wind outta ya sails!!:crying2: The guy in the records office was...eh! The chick in the business office was...eh! But the dude in financial aid!?? By the time I was done with his none to eloquent speech on me not having the proper documentation to qualify for financial aid, I felt as if I was a piece of bottom-of-the-pond scum, that had crawled out of the lagoon, and had the gall to apply for classes at his school! I had to drag myself back to the business office to be advised that I couldn't register for the nursing classes that I've waited TWO years to register for, unless I came up with a substantial deposit!:crying2: Which ofcourse I don't have!:twocents:! I'm just SO down right now!:sniff:*wine My question is...WHY DEY GOTTA BE SO MEAN:confused:???????

All my Co's are done after this semester, only nursing courses from here on out :D... Thanks for all the replies!

JaRoJoCT,

I would ask to speak with someone else in the financial aid dept. Did he even tell you what documentation you need?? I don't understand why the most unhelpful, rude people decide it's a great career move to work with the public. You are a customer and there is no reason anyone should be giving you crap. I would try again with financial aid. Don't give up!! You've come to far!

Thanks, JosieD. I know...it's amazing how rude he was, and he didn't even know me! To make it worse, he was talking about me to the other people in the department, as I was walking out. It felt like the longest walk, bcuz I knew he meant me. At least he had the decency to stop talking when he spotted me! I was in tears by the time I got to my car. I had been waiting for the thrill of registering for my first nursing course for ages, and he made me feel worthless. I know that sounds extreme, but this has been my dream; this is my life! And some person I'd never met before had the ability to make me feel like a nobody. I did speak with someone else at the school, and she was nice, and told me what I had to do, and I'm all set now. It was something so easy! All of that drama for just a straight forward process. I'm back on track, and I can't wait for classes to start in August. I've earned it! And I ain't going nowhere!!!!!:D
