Get pretty much everything on the list. You will definitely need the stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, pen light, watch w/ second hand, bandage scissors, and clip board. The safety glasses you will use in second semester. I didn't use my hemostats until second semester as well. Don't get the gait belt. Important! Order an extra name tag from the bookstore with just your first name and last initial. It will definitely come in handy as the name tags are easy to lose and you don't want to get caught without one. I have never worn my lab coat once and neither has anyone else I know. Don't bother getting one. I shop at Scrubtastic near rainbow and 215. They offer a 10% student discount.

Ditto most of the above. A clipboard that opens is great. Need steth, BP cuff, pen light, badge scissors and watch. The little organizer is good and usually comes with the scissors, pen and penlight. Yes, have more than 1 name badge. I have 4*L*.

Depending on your lab instructor u might be required to bring safety glasses to lab first semester... Don't go for the. Ams badge with just a last initial until 2 nd semester because, again, if you have certain instructors, they will only accept the ones with your full name... Order and extra one of those ( I got two and they TOTALLY came in handy) and get the other one second semester for mental health :)

I didn't even do that. I just used a piece of 3x5 cut to size and taped it over my last name.

I'm confused about the lab scrubs and I can't find it written anywhere. On the red sheet we got at orientation it states uniform requirements and only talks about "slacks" no drawstring. When I purchased the pants for clinical at orientation the only option was drawstring. Also, it doesn't specify what we can wear in lab. Can we purchase any scrubs for lab? Can they be drawstring? Are we only allowed certain colors? Are prints allowed? I called the nursing department today and only got VM. Also, does anyone have any shoe recommendations? Are Dansko's considered clogs even though they have closed backs?

Oh, yeah as for name tags has anyone used the magnetic back tags? Is there any value to spending the extra $$$ other than to eliminate pin holes in your uniform? Are the magnetic ones even allowed? I tried to order an extra at the bookstore and the guy that does the ordering won't be back until later in the month.

For lab you can wear any kind of scrub you want. We were also told no drawstrings, but i know a few who have them and nothing has ever been said. I have a pair of Crocs clogs and no one has said anything to me. As long as they have a closed toe and back and are white they should be good!

From what I understand, the no drawsting rule has been changed. I love that we can have any scrubs for lab. I just wish they were cheaper. :) I want so many of them!!

I'm wondering if any current or former students have any "real" advice as to what we really need versus what is recommended or optional. Also, if you have any favorite resources that you can share, where to shop, what brands are preferred, etc.

Drawstring is a MUST! I started the program when they still said no drawstring, but I got them anyway. Nobody ever checked, and I'm about to start 4th semester.

Get pants and a top that have POCKETS! You will end up carrying all kinds of stuff in your pockets, and your pants get really heavy. This is where the drawstring is priceless.

White Crocs that have solid (closed) toes and backs on them can be found at the Crocs store at Town Square. I believe they are even called "medical" crocs, or "work" crocs because of the closed toe/back requirement from OSHA for employees.

Get a good scope, buy extra name tags and keep them strategically placed in your car and other places, and have fun!
