CRNA'S: How flexible is your work schedule?

Updated:   Published

Just a question out of curiosity to all the practicing CRNA's: What are your regular work schedules like? Do you usually work 9-5 Monday trough Friday? Or do you have the same flexible schedule options as nurses in other fields? I've always liked that in nursing you can work three 12 hour shifts and be done for the week. I was just wondering if that's even an option as a CRNA?

I work three 12+ hour days a week.... the residents do the weekday call and on the weekend days I am assigned call, a resident will take it for me and be paid " moonlighting money" from the department as they are cheaper labor than I am so I in effect have NO call. On my days off I often work in smaller outlying hospitals for an hourly amount equal to a locums BUT since those anesthesia departments are ALSO part of the University Medical School I work for, It all comes on the same check. THAT part is my Texas Holdum fund.

Qwiigley, do you have on call days?

Also, its been awhile since this post so could you update us on how you're holding up with the long hour shifts?

Thanks.

I tend to like smaller hospitals. Many days I'll be done at noon. Other days I dont go in at all.

My last spot was 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. Great schedule.

When you're scheduled two- 24 hour shifts, how are you scheduled? do you have 12 off in between? or 24 hours? is it worth scheduling yourself 24 hours with the amount of time you'll have off etc? or are you just exhausted and not feel like you actually have that amount off?
