I need to become a qualified critical care nurse

I am an RN working at medsurge floor.

I have always wanted to become a critical care nurse but with covid-19 hospitals are not willing to accommodate shadowing.

My hospital will not give me the chance.

Please advise.

Your hospital won't give you a chance to shadow or won't give you a job in critical care? There are many critical care units willing to train RNs these days, and nurses change from med surg to critical care all the time, I did it myself over three years ago. If your hospital won't do it, are there other hospitals in your area? Apply for positions if you think it's what you want to do, a shadow experience isn't necessary and in some cases it's not indicative of the work on the floor depending on what happens the day that you shadow. Keep trying. Good luck.

If you are pretty confident that you want critical care I say just start applying. If you get an interview set up and it goes well, you can request an opportunity to shadow at that time. (Where I work it is not uncommon for someone to shadow a few hours immediately following the interview.)
