Experienced NICU Nurse Shadow an ICU nurse

Specialties Critical

Published

Hello,

I am an experienced NICU nurse with 3 years of experience. I have my neonatal CCRN. I am wanting to possibly change specialties to adult ICU. But, at the very least I want to experience an adult ICU for a few days to see what it is like and how it is different from a NICU.

Does anyone know of a hospital in southern california, preferably Inland Empire that would be willing to let me shadow an adult ICU nurse for a day?

Or if you are an ICU nurse, would your facility let me shadow you?

Thanks!

Highly unlikely that you're going to get any takers on this. There are too many liability issues at stake for hospitals to allow non-employees (not affiliated with an educational program) to have any access to their patients or staff in the work setting.

Maybe I should consider an internship then? Anyone know of any that consider experienced nurses?

No, but if you work in the NICU, you should talk to the adult ICU manager at your facility to see if they would let you shadow for a day. I've never seen it happen, but it doesn't hurt to ask. You could apply for a new grad ICU position, then get fast-tracked if hired.
