Help! I am a University of Florida nursing student who needs articles regarding the history and evolution of critical care units. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. This is for a term paper and I am having difficulty finding appropriate information.

I can't refer you to any articles but I can tell you what I remember. In 1966, I was a student nurse in Pgh.Pa. I can remember being taken during orientation for a tour of the hospital(this was a large non profit womens hospital} and during the tour being shown the place where the new intensive care unit was going to be installed. The concept of intensive care was totally new back then and we students had not even heard of the idea before that day. Differentation into speciality units like CCU, MICU and SICU came, I would guess, about 10 years later, I cannot remember for sure. However, I specifically remember taking a job at a small private hospital in 1967 which did not have a ICU, however they did open one in 1970. One of the things that I can recall very well is that once it did open I was pulled to work in it without proper orientation. Somethings never change, there has been a shortage of skilled ICU nurses since the day the first ICU opened. ------------------

Oramar,

Thanks so much for replying to the topic of critical care. I enjoyed reading your experience with the beginning of ICU development. I already turned in my paper and got an A ! Yeah! Thanks again
