Has anyone applied to Creighton for their fall accelerated BSN program. I was accepted. It was one of 5 schools that I have applied to . Currently I am in California and want to see the school..Anyone have any comments input? :)

hey

Congrats Seattlejen, I just got the email from carla hodder today as well saying that I am also conditionally accepted for the Aug 2010 class, however I applied over 4 months ago for the Jan 2010 class. So I really want to get into the Jan class, you said earlier that there were only 4 seats left in the Jan 2010 class? Seattlejen, the funny thing is that when I would call Creighton in January and talk to either Erron or Carla they would both tell me that half of the class is not even full yet. I am really upset because I do not want to go for the Aug 2010 class. However, Carla did say in the email that she put me on a "Short" wait list for the Jan 2010 class. I am very worried because I do not want to wait another year.

so does anyone know what the chances are if I am on the wait list of actually getting into the program for Jan 2010? Do people drop out or change what semester they want to start? Please let me know. Thanks

All - Yes, I live here in Omaha and have 2 friends in the accelerated program. Both of them were put on a wait list and were moved up a class. You would be surprised how many people drop out before the semester starts... I would recommend getting ALL of your requirements in (physical, background check, immunizations, ect) so that if they call you, you are ready to go.

I think there is a good chance both of you will move up one class... especially if there is a "short" wait list!

Not guaranteed but certainly a possibility!

Hope this helps,

Elizabeth

I'll give my insight to Creighton and the "scholarship program" First, I was in the January of 2008 class, with a 4.0 and the final class of the program I failed by 1 question enough to fail the course, so now I am back in taking class again, just finished up and started my preceptor on Saturday. First of all - if you fail in the August class, the January class is right behind you to pick you back up. If you fail in January you've got 9 months of sitting idle so be aware of that January peeps! I applied in March for the August class and was accepted for August of 2009, because of that rolling admission. I was 12 on the wait list and was accepted into January and there were 4 people behind me that were accepted as well. It is a very hard program. Do not underestimate it, do not try and work when in it. I have several friends who are part of the "scholarship program" The scholarship is offered by Creighton hospital not Creighton university so it has literally nothing to do with school. it is a work contract, not a scholarship. The people in it were made promises that were not followed through with. It makes sense that if they are paying for school and giving you a job - they aren't going to treat you like royalty and let you have the position you desire if there isnt one available. That being said, those who took the scholarship did not understand this and two of them ended up taking out a massive loan in November to get out of the contract. If you quit at any time you have 30 days to pay it back. Now, 2 people failed with me who were scholarship kids, and their school is still paid for and they still have job openings - they don't fall under the 30 day payback policy. Considering teh economy now, the guaranteed job might be the way to go - I'm working and doing my preceptor at Alegent (another hospital facility in Omaha) and they have minimal openings and are sending people home all the time so everyone is hurtingfor hours. Nebraska doesn't pay as well as other states because there's never truly been a nursing shortage here - there are 7 nursing schools in the little area we are in with 3 of those schools having accelerated programs concurrently so there's always a variety of graduating nurses here. It's never been difficult (until now) to find a job but the pay is lower. If you have any other questions about creighton just shoot me a message and I can try and help you out best as possible! Like I said - I did it once and am doing it again (and I actually worked there in another department) so I know the tricks!

sundevil I sent you a private message, thanks bye

Hi

I am applying to Creighton University for the accelerated program for the spring 2010 program. I am also from cali, I am finding it really difficult to get into school here in california. I have heard nothing but great stuff about this school and even when I call creighton they are so nice an helpful. I was just wondering if any of you who have been accepted, can you please tell me your cum gpa and science gpa? My cum gpa is 2.8 , however my pre-req nursing is about 3.5, so I am really hoping that I can get into the program. Also can you tell me after you applied how long did it take them to let you know if you got into the program? thanks

Hey! I actually don't have the ability to send private messages either but if you want to give me your email address I can talk with you about it for sure! I will say that my class in general had a horrible experience and the faculty had a horrible experience with us, so it was slightly skewed. I believe I got a letter telling me where I was on the wait list, and I was 12 and I thought for sure I wouldn't get in but I did and people behind me did as well, so there's a really good chance you could be in for August. I know a girl that found out on Saturday when orientation was on Monday. Luckily she was in Omaha, but another girl from California found out on Thursday of the prior week. I think because you have to apply so early people change their minds and what not so you should have a good shot at it. But if you want to send me your email address (I would put mine on here but since my address is my name it kinda defeats the purpose of not talking about CU here and knowing who it is!)

Hi SundevilATC,

I am going to start the Creighton ANP this August 2009 and I am taking out loans for this. My biggest concern is that I will not be able to find a job when I am finished. My husband works here in Nebraska and I will not be able to move out of state for a job. I need to find one in the Omaha area. From what you've heard, how difficult is it to get a job? I will definitely NEED ONE with all the loans I'm taking out!

Thanks for your input.

I actually just looked today at jobs and there are afew out there, but not as many as when I was looking at this time last year. One tip is that I worked as a CNA at Alegent during that last semester PRN. You get your CNA completed at the end of your junior year or second semester, so just send your transcripts in to the licensing place and you're set - no fee or anything - and you are a Certified Nursing Assistant. THEN I worked PRN which is an 8 hour a month requirement. This got me known on the unit I was hoping to eventually work on, they requested that I do my preceptor there - which I'm doing now and the unit director just asked if I wanted her to open an RN position to hire me upon completion. I think the units that have CNAs that are in nursing school are very helpful in hiring you on as an RN upon graduation, sort of a thank you for helping type thing. So while this job isn't necessarily on any job search boards, I know that I can work on this unit upon graduation if I want. I'm just not sure if I want...but there's also a lot of hospital construction going on right now that'll be completed within the next few years so those places will definitely have openings. Right now is just a slowtime but once they've built these they have to staff them!

Thanks for your reply. I have also been looking at the new construction and hoping that will really help out the new grads that need jobs. I think the CNA is a great way to go but I already have everything set up to get my BSN in the 12 month accelerated program so it's not really going to work for me. Hopefully I can get a good preceptorship where they like me and will open a position for me... or I can get into one of those new hospitals. I'm just going to have faith that it will work out because I don't really have a backup plan at this point!

I know the only people from my previous class that had trouble finding jobs went to Minneapolis and Chicago. Everyone that stayed in town found jobs. I know things have changed, but I think jobs are still there, the hiring bonuses just may not be!

Hi Sundevil

here is my private email address: [email protected], can you please email me on that email address because I have a couple of personal questions for you. Thanks so much bye

hey there SundevilATC, i hope that your class goes better this time, sounds like you had a tough 'round. I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about the scheduling of the classes and what a typical week is like (if it varies a lot etc.) I start in January and Carla said that we will be getting things in the mail in November, but i was interested in the registration/advisor process (are we supposed to be doing anything before we get that packet online at all? Are all the classes pre selected for us and we just basically show up?) i just don't want to miss a deadline or anything. Any input or advice would be great. thanks and good luck again!

I recently graduated from the Accelerated Nursing Program at Creighton and am also a "scholarship" student. Looking back I am thankful that I accepted the scholarship. I did not have to take out any loans this past year and I have a guaranteed job, which in this economy is something to be grateful for. I would like to clear up some of the things I have seen on previous posts. The "scholarship", like someone previously stated, is a work agreement. The hospital covers 75% to 100% of tuition in exchange for 3 or 4 years of employment, respectively. For me, I saw this as a $40,000 sign on bonus. Anybody that says there are hidden terms and false promises is severly misinformed. A detailed contract is given to you before you accept the offer. I was aware of the fact that I might not get my 1st choice of jobs, but I was willing to take this chance, because it was a guaranteed job. I know one girl who opted out of the scholarship during the 1st semester and she took out loans to repay the cost. Some people made it to the end of the year, interviewed for a job, then found out there were not enough jobs available so the contract was terminated. Since it was the hospital that ended the contract, the students are not obligated to pay the money back. If you are considering the "scholarship," my advice is to make sure it is right for you and to also read carefully through the contract to make sure you understand it completely. I am willing to answer any questions people might have about either the program or the scholarship, so let me know. I can't reply to private messages, so if you have a question you don't want to post just make sure to include your email in the private message.
