CPS flag

Published

Hi! I hope I'm putting this in the right place, but I've been wondering if anyone else has dealt with this. I'm trying to apply for RN by exam, and I had to consent to the Adam Walsh background check. More than 10 years ago DCF got involved with my family because my (now) ex-husband assaulted  my infant, apparently a couple times. It was completely unknown to me, as I was at work when it happened, but she appeared sick, so I was bringing her to her pediatrician and the ER several times; it was only after my ex said she fell off the bed, that the ER finally did a CT, and found subdural hematomas. Very obviously, DCF got involved, initially took custody (I got custody back at the 72 hour hearing, after my ex confessed and I filed for separation). Because it took so long for him to confess, DCF treated us both as perpetrators and supported the Care and Protection. He was ultimately  charged and convicted of his crimes, and my child is doing really great these days with no residuals (thank god!!!).

Any way... apparently my name came up on the DCF registry as being part of a protective services case, and now my application for licensure by exam is under review. With Good Moral Character, there is a list of items that the Board wants, but there is absolutely no information for individuals who show up on the Registry but have no criminal history. Does anyone know how long the review will take, or what they might want for documentation? I'm trying to pace myself studying for the NCLEX, and wonder if they will even let me? (I assume I'm listed as "neglectful" for "failing to keep the child safe", which I already feel sooo much guilt for, even though I was at work when it happened.) As additional info, I do currently work with children, and my history has never been a problem...

I haven't been on this thread in 2 years, but I just wanted to give some insight/info on my experience...

It took several months from the time I graduated to finally be able to get my ATT code and sit for NCLEX (graduated in May and sat for NCLEX in September) . And that was 2 years ago when they first began this new "CPS Flag". I had to re-live my past (15+years ago) and explain to complete strangers uncomfortable, embarrassing, & traumatizing situations that I had worked extremely hard to overcome. I do understand why they are doing these kinds of checks, but I disagree on how they are approaching it. I NEVER abused my child or anything of that nature!! I think they need to reorganize and rethink the structure of this. But anyway....I pushed my Liason that was assigned to me to get this done.  I know I drove her crazy, but do not sit back & wait! Be on them to get you in front of the Board ASAP. I want to say that the Board only meets twice a month so if you aren't persistent, then you could be waiting quite some time! Good luck to all!!

Thank you for your reply and insight. You would think that the "new process" would move a little faster but its not looking that way. It's insane how long this process is but the worst part is the lack of information out there for those of us going through it. This is literally the only place online I was able to find with any info regarding this. There's absolutely no information on the BORN website about the process or timeline and the email replies are so vague.

I agree it's a complete nightmare. Embarrassing to say the least! I was able to get licensed in CT. And will now need to apply for reciprocity in Mass! So atleast I was able to sit for NCLEX. I graduated in May and I'm still waiting!

Hi, Same thing is happening to me right now. Registered end of May and put in CPS review for an incident 8 years ago! Now the board wants me to update my letter with more information, but at least they are sending me mail fairly quickly now. Hoping this does not take much longer to get my ticket to test!

Where in mass are you located?

Apply for licensing in  another state and then apply for resiprocity in mass once you are licensed.

I thought it was national? I wouldn't be flagged in another state? I'm hoping this goes quickly because I have LPN license in MA and I want to continue my RN at same facility.

I can look into another state, where did you test and was it recent?

Nope I wish I had known sooner! The background check is not National. I have my mass LPN license and CT RN license. I'm still going through the same process but now just waiting g for reciprocity. But atleast I was able to get ATT, take NCLEX and get licensed. After months of not studying things are not so fresh. Each state has different requirements.

Do you need to switch your MA application to reciprocity? Or will you need to take the test again in MA? Would that work in NH too?

I'm nowhere near CT so wouldn't be able to work there with a CT license unless it was remote

Atleast you would be able to test. Waiting to meet with the board will take months!

You only test once. NCLEX Is National. Your application would need to be changed to reciprocity though and you would lose that initial fee you paid for first license. I still use my LPN and am just patiently waiting for Mass to come through. It's not ide because I went to school for my RN But atleast I was able to test and get that out the way. Otherwise I don't know how successful I would be testing months out after school.
