Cost of Nursing education in the US

Published

Hi

I'm from New Zealand and I'm training to be an RN, I'm in my first year. I'm just wondering how much does it cost to study/train to become an RN in America?

If the education was free what would you choose to do?

In America, the average cost to attend a college and become an RN can range from $20,000 to $30,000 a year. However, it will take two years to achieve your associates degree and four to obtain your bachelor's. College is extremely costly, but very beneficial in becoming an RN. This is because the college will train you along the way with key core factors of being a nurse. In addition, there are always additional costs along the way such as books, supplies, proper medical apparel, medical equipment, and lab fees that can cost thousands of dollars when combined. But, there are always grants and methods of financial aid that may help pay for some, if not all of the costs. If the education was free I would most definitely pick it because the process of going into your dream career is the most difficult part of it all and if I had an opportunity to attend college for free it would be one less burden to worry about.

In California if you go private school it can go from 50k to 100K. But if you go public it can go from anywhere between $2K to 4$k. The $2k is ADN from a community college.

I think there is a tendency to forget that the whole nursing thing is somewhere between 3 to 4 years. 1.5 - 2 years for prereqs and 2 years of pure nursing (ADN) or 3 years (BSN).

It all depends on what kind of college you go to. My best friend is going to a for profit college and will pay over 20k for her LPN. I am going to a local community college and will pay less than 10k for my RN. When I transition to my BSN I will probably pay around another 5-10K through an accelerated program.
