Is there not a nursing shortage in Tenn.? Today I heard a PHS executive staff member said "there is no nursing shortage. Nurses are a dime a dozen." Is this the situation in Tenn, or what? I was under the impression that the nsg shortage was across the country. The nurse he said it to works in a prison in the New England area. She was incensed. She quit.

I don't know about Tenn, but in New England specifically MA there is a HUGE nursing shortage. I live in Vegas now but I moved from MA in July of 03 and have alot of nurse friends back there. If you have an active good standing license and a pulse your hired. They will not let you out of the building, sometimes you feel like your buying a car. LOL.Your typical "interview" there is whats your experience? this is the job description, it pays x amount, these are the benefits and hours, when can you start?

There is a nursing shortage in TN. Don't let them fool you. They said the same thing to a friend of mine. I worked in TN last winter and there is definately a shortage. The place where I worked was just willing to have a higher nurse to pt ratio than most places deem safe. I also interviewed for a travel position for a different city/facility in tennessee for this winter.

Thanks for your repliesfolks. I really needed to know if this fellow was from another planet or if TN had no shortage. Seems he's from another planet

Pattiecake - Did you actually hear this PHS executive say this or was this information given to you second hand? It is my experience that when a company takes over a medical department, rumors are rampant. I would inform someone within the PHS system about this alleged comment.

PHS is well aware of the nursing shortage and the difficulty in recruiting quality nurses. It is discussed at all levels of the corporation. It may be of interest to know that PHS was founded by 2 nurses and nurses are found all the way up the executive ranks. I have never heard anyone say that nurses are a dime a dozen or demean nurses in anyway ever.
