Contracting diseases?

Are you worried about contracting a disease such as, AIDS or TB? Obviously you take the necessary precautions to keep yourself safe, but there is always that risk. How rare or common is it? I always wanted to be a neonatal nurse so I bet there is a less chance of catching something like HIV or TB because they're just babies, right?

There are some good answers listed. Just make sure you are safe and practice good handwashing and use your PPE. When I worked in the ICU several nurses would glove and gown up when we got an admit because you just never know when a doctor, lab, admitting, etc will say oh by the way so and so has MRSA or VRE.

Yeah, nothing like getting g-tube juice splashed in your face and finding out a couple days when you're back, "Oh, btw, Mrs. X has MRSA in her g-tube." (That happened to me, actually.)
