Contracted Grp vs Hospital employee

What are your percieved positives and negatives between hospital employee and being apart of a CRNA or Anesthesia Team group?

Is there one that is better than another? Im currently considering an offer to have school 50% paid for in return for 2 yrs of commitment in a hospital system. As someone not farimilar with the oppertunites and advantages/disadvantages of each choice, what do you think?

The closer you are to being a CRNA, the more money you'll get (unless it is a standard package offered to all students/recruits). These don't seem to necessarily be the "best" offers but work well for many people with specific needs or a clear idea of where they want to work.

interesting stuff

Well currently im on a condition acceptance track. The offer (i believe) is avalaible to a # of people per year by the institution (i have no idea how many). In anycase, from my current standpoint it seems great, but i wonder if i would think that way in my last 6 months when i am more educated about offers and oppertunities?

Are there other disadvantages or advantages of working with a group as opposed to a hospital?

Is this 50% of any school or a specific school. The more you research programs, you will realize that there is a wide spectrum of tuition for anesthesia school (public vs private, in state vs out of state) ranging from a program like Mayo that is virtually free (tuition minus stipend) to UPenn that is 90,000+ for tuition. If I were you, I would focus on getting into school rather than looking for a contract. I'd have to say, it seems like you are in the worst possible bargining position and the hospital is in the best possible bargining position. If you don't go to school, the hospital isn't out anything and if you go, they suckered you in before you could look at anything else. That aside, hosptial employee vs group depends on what kind of institution you are looking to work in. When I graduate, I initially want to be at a large, county, teaching hosptial so I am almost certain I will end up a hospital employee, working in some sort of anesthesia care team arrangement. If you are interested in solo practice, a group may cover a small (or large) private hospital. Some groups are also set up as anesthesia care teams so it just depends. I think groups tend to pay more than hospitals but I'm not completely sure about this. I'm not an expert and a ways away from looking for a job but these are my overall impressions.

I have classmates who signed contracts before the program started and I know a few of them are already disappointed in the deal they got. I also know one guy who graduated in December who was very happy with the deal he set up ?before/in school which included unlimited interest free loans from the anesthesia group and he would just call then up and say he needed $10,000 to pay tuition and the check would be there a few days later. He went to work in Michigan and I know there are great deals for CRNAs there.

This is 50% of a specific school. Ive already decided where i want to go so im not applying anywhere else. Thats the deal they are offering.

Well thats essentially taken care of. What im looking to learn about is/are the benefits of working for a group vs hospital. I have the option to pay it all myself without a hospital payback contract if i want or i could take the deal and have a 2 yr committment at a huge institution which is very pro CRNA (i believe its an ACT environenment). I will have to make a decision soon if i want the hospital contract or pay myself.

Absolutely. A school always is in the power position when your a student applicant. Unless you have something to offer that other students typically dont which may bring the program some recognition, there is no way to stand out.

Essentially, what im looking for is good experience. Not money. I am more than willing to make low end CRNA pay if i can work somewhere that i can more experience with more complex cases. Im an A type guy, i want to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone. Adds like "bread and butter cases" arent what im looking for in a future job. Good some some, just not me.

Congratulations on your acceptance to school! Most of the tuition reimbursement deals I've heard about offer about 30,000 for a two year contract.

The 30K is probably about right based on their tuition. Seems like alot to me.

In general, hospital employee retirement plans are like a Hoover vacuum cleaner compared to group retirement, benefits, and 401K, 403B, and matching contributions.

Small details like this mean BIG money.

Let me clarify as this could be misleading.

I have a verbal agreement in regards to acceptance as long as i complete certain criteria. I will be meeting with them soon in order to discuss the whole thing. So far so good!
