Hello All, I am just contemplating a nursing career and I believe I really have the attitude and drive, but I'm afraid of learning how to take blood and start IV's. Blood itself doesn't bother me, I'm just scared that I will hurt someone trying to start an IV. Is this something a person can overcome in time, or should I rethink my career path? Many Thanks!

As someone who has had an IV inserted myself (as well as being the RN to start one), they do hurt going in. But if you practice, it gets easier. In some facilities, you can use a bit of lidocaine to numb the area before starting an IV. Don't worry, you will get more comfortable doing these procedures with time. I still don't like to poke people with needles, but it's necessary. I think most important is that you show compassion, and try to get the job done as painlesslly as possible. Best wishes with school!
