Considering the LNC path

Published

Specializes in Ob-Gyn, Case Management.

I was hoping that someone may be able to answer a question for me before I head down this path. I have been doing extensive research prior to making a decision to become an LNC. I am trying to settle between 2 curriculums, the Milazzo Institute or the AALNC online program.

My two questions are: I have 10 years of high risk Labor& Delivery experience and 2 years in Case Management short-term disability for a large insurance company (insurance job was about 8 years ago). I am actively RN licensed but have not worked in the clinical setting for almost 2+ years. For the past 5 years, I have worked for a Medical Transcription company serving as the RN Director of Operations (overseeing quality processes for delivering accurate records to our clients and hospitals). I believe that I have drive, motivation, organization and great research skills. 1. Will I be able to be a successful LNC doing all types of medical cases and not just be limited to OB? 2. Any preferred curriculum suggestions? Any information would be much appreciated.

hello avazmom and welcome to allnurses.com. we are glad you found us and hope you enjoy the site. you have come to a great place to learn more about becoming an lnc.

you are wise to do research before deciding on which lnc program is right for you. of all of the available programs, i think you have narrowed it down to 2 excellent choices. i am currently doing the aalnc online program and have been very pleased with it. i would be more than happy to talk with you further about this program. the vickie milazzo program is an excellent program as well. there are many here who have completed this program and can advise you about that option.

when i was trying to decide upon a training program, these were the 2 programs i narrowed it down to as well. i don't think you will go wrong with either option. both programs offer a solid training. you will need to decide which one will meet your schedule and budget, as well as which teaching method is better suited to you.

you have more than enough nursing experience to be an lnc. you also possess the right characteristics.....drive, motivation, organization, and great research skills....to be a successful lnc. i wouldn't worry about having to limit yourself to ob cases. you will be able to utilize your nursing knowledge in many different kinds of lnc cases.

good luck with your decision. feel free to pm me if you would like more information.

Good luck with your decision(s). You will do just fine in this career choice with your background.

Specializes in dialysis, m/s.

Hi guys! I, too, am considering this option. I have WAY less experience than avazmom (4 yrs chronic dialysis, including some clinical management experience and a couple yrs med/surg). But I am booksmart, professional, and concerned about/ interested in legal and ethical issues in practice. Especially in the outpatient dialysis setting.

I have a few questions...

Is there plenty of work available for LNC's? Is there a lot of competition?

How many nurses get LNC accreditation and don't utilize it?

How's the pay?

avazmom...Thanks for starting this thread!

Hello, mo-mo,

You have plenty of nursing experience to do this.

Yes, there is plenty of work available. Just remember you do not have to market in your own immediate area.

As for the competition? I've never had any, believe it or not. I've been full-time for several years and yet to run across another LNC who already secured a client to whom I was marketing. I suppose it depends on the area.

As for how many become educated and never utilize this? MANY. Many.....many do this and don't use it. Many different reasons as well. It is a difficult career to get a foot hold for so many and they often become disillusioned. Others find out this career choice wasn't what they expected. Still others go into this career for the wrong reason(s). Many become educated and utilize this in hospital as case managers, QC, assist the hospital legal team, etc.

IMHO? The pay is excellent. We don't really discuss numbers here on the public boards. But, it is absolutely possible to be financially secure working as an LNC.

If you have other questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me and/or post here.
