Confusion applying for DEA number

Published

Hello all. This is my first time actually posting although I have been a long time member. Many people provide many great answers to issues, and I have a large one.

I recently graduated from my NP program in California. I passed my licensing test and have received my AANP certification number. I applied for my NPI number. I also applied for my state licensing and furnishing numbers with the BRN. I am trying to apply for my DEA. The DEA online application is asking for my state license number. Is it the same as my AANP national certification number? I know this may be a dumb question. But I was just thinking that maybe once I submit my application with the state they will just register the same national certification number, and I can use it to apply for my DEA. I don't want to take any chances because if I make any mistakes I will lose my DEA application fee (which is a ton of money). I'm having trouble getting a straight answer. Do I need to wait for my BRN application to be processed before applying for my DEA? Can I apply with my AANP certification number?

Thank you in advance for any and all help.

You must have your state license and furnishing numbers before you can apply for a DEA license. AANP certification is simply that, a certification. It does not grant you any privilege to actually practice. Only a state license does that. So, no DEA license without state first.

Thank you so much for the response. I really appreciate it. That really clears things up for me.
