Confused on Pre-reqs

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all! I am currently enrolled at a State School in NY majoring in Child and Family Services. I plan on transferring once I graduate in May to a community college for nursing. I am a tad confused though. These are the pre-req's they have for their program:

[h=3]Prerequisites:[/h]

  • High School Regents Level Chemistry with lab, Regents score of 70 or high school score of 70 within 10 years of admission to first Nursing course. College-level chemistry with a grade of C or higher.
  • Appropriate math placement test score, MA 45 or MA 050 or college-level math grade of C or better.
  • Anatomy & Physiology 1 (BI106)
  • GPA 2.85 current.

I took chem in high school and passed the regents as well as the class with better than a 70 so that is met, for math I took 112 at my current school and 111 was introductory math so that is met and I have a 3.93GPA so that is met. I am confused because it says a pre-req is A&P 1, but when you look here:

Degree Programs | MVCC | Mohawk Valley Community College

(their nursing degree, not pre-nursing) it says they recommend taking A&P 1, the same class as they have listed as a pre req for the nursing program your first semester. How can it be a pre req and be a suggested course your first semester for nursing? If I am accepted, can I follow the suggested route of action for nursing or do I need to just take A&P first, then get into the program?

Hope this makes sense! :]

I am a student getting ready to start the fourth semester of my ADN program. I'm not sure exactly what your school requirements are, but I would recommend completing all other prerequisites and co-requisites before beginning the nursing program. I still had three co-requisite classes to take after I started the program. And though they were not hard classes, I found myself many times wishing that I could spend the time required for those "non-nursing" classes studying my nursing material. Additionally, the material you learn in A&P is necessary for nursing. I feel it would be a disadvantage to not already have that knowledge. I do know at least one person, though, who took A&P II while already in the program, and she's still around, so... These, of course, are just my opinions, and I wish you the best!

Do they have direct entry for high school students? My school does, so in that case A&P 1 is recommended for their first semester. Everyone else has to take it as a prereq. If the school doesn't do direct entry, then they probably just made a mistake on the website...I would give them a call.

I think I understand your question, although you're using very different terms than what I have heard at my schools. I can try give you a good example though. The college I currently attend requires that you take courses like Psychology, Algebra, MicroBiology, A&P1, A&P2, English 1 & 2, Human Growth & Development; etc. I may be missing one. One of the colleges I will apply to, require only Algebra and A&P1 as prerequisites to applying. However, they suggest that we take all of the above, including a Human Nutrition class, before applying because of the competitive nature of the program these days. If there were not so many applicants striving to be on the top, some colleges may get away with accepting those who have only taken one or two classes and then simply include the others in the nursing curriculum. I hope this helps!

It sounds like you are graduating with a bachelor's degree so I suggest that you stop at the college you want to go to and speak with a transfer counselor. I was in the same boat having my BS and the transfer counselor went through my transcripts and the nursing pre-req's and told me exactly what classes I had to take before applying to the program.

Good luck!

I plan on calling them but they are closed for the holidays right now and re-open on the 3rd. I plan on calling them then. I want to see if some of my credits will transfer too. If they do (my freshman foundation class, math, composition, sociology and psychology) then I will have all the prereqs done except the A&P1. And on their site it says they have a pre-nursing for those that do not have the prereqs so I am assuming they would stick me in that and my first semester would be only A&P since everything else would be met. We'll see! I hope not because that would entail another semester, which I really don't want to do, but if that's what it takes to get my nursing degree then so be it!
