Hello there, and welcome to the wonderful family of allnurses. I am not a nurse, but someone will stroll around soon to advice you. Do want to wish you the betst of luck to you. :icon_hug:

I'm not sure what you are asking. Do you anticipate this to be asked of you during an interview for a staff nurse position?

Assignments in the NICU are not usually "equal", as the charge nurse, transport nurse, and delivery room nurse start out with lighter assignments in order to accomodate their duties other than patient care. Beyond that, assignments should be made with safety in mind. Critical babies are 1:1 or 1:2. Some even require 2RNs to 1 infant, such as ECMO patients. Other, more stable babies may be 1:3 or 1:4, depending on their needs. Well grower feeders may be 1:5.

A unique aspect of the NICU is that the staff and patients are all located in close proximity to each other, making teamwork the norm, not the exception. If a nurse has a heavier than usual assignment s/he should be able to ask for and receive help from her colleagues. If an inexperienced nurse is given a challenging baby, a resource person should be assigned for the shift. That is how newbies learn and gain confidence.

I should add that if a staff nurse truly feels that an assignment is not manageable, s/he should go up the chain of command within the unit: charge nurse, nurse manager, department supervisor. I can honestly say that is rarely necessary, as NICU nurses typically work well together and look out for each other, and their patients.

Yes, Im anticipating those questions for my interview and also What would be the best response if they ask me which skills do you think you want to improve in the next year. Thanks
