confidence

I just finished my first year of nursing school. Before I begin my second year, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for nursing students who need help with confidence, being assertive and building leadership skills (books/journals/advice)?

Sun Tzu's "the art of war" and machiavelli's "the prince". Both are excellent primers on leadership which are very transferrable to today.

We were taught assertive language during my psychiatric nursing course last spring by using the phase "I feel__________." It really works.

That's part of a validation technique which is designed to show the other person that you are engaged and empathetic to them. You can couple that with "if I understand you, (paraphrasing what they said). And yes, this works very well in conflict resolution and also ensures that you do understand what the other party is talking about.

Love it!
