Concentration vs Concentrating Effect

My class is in the 2nd semester of our Doctorate program. Between our physics and pharmacology class, we are getting conflicting information regarding the difference between the concentration effect and the concentrating effect with gases. We’ve tried asking both instructors but they both seem to have different understanding of these concepts. Does anyone have any advice on how to understand these two concepts and how to differentiate them?

Thanks!!

The concentration-effect of gases as far as I am concerned generally refers to Blood/Gas partition coefficient, which is the solubility of the gases in the blood and alveolar space. This obeys the Ostwald law.
The concentrating effect with other gases obeys the Ficks law (The second gas effect/Diffusion Hypoxia). This only applies to Nitrous Oxide. It is due to the acceleration of large inspired concentration of Nitrous oxide, which subsequently accelerates the uptake of the second gas into the blood and speeds the onset of the second gas. The reverse happens during emergence where the diffusion occurs.
I hope this helps!!
