community mental health

Published

Hey all,

I'm a new grad and have worked for 3 months in postpartum. I find I am more interested in the psychological, counselling, coping skills etc side of nursing. I have a B.A. in psychology along with my BSN & RN.

There is an opportunity for community mental health nursing position that is willing to look at new grads, so I applied.

Just wondering - what does community mental health nursing entail? I was searching for some threads but so far haven't come up with one that has a thorough explanation.

Would be grateful for any responses. Thanks.

Specializes in ICU, CCU, Trauma, neuro, Geriatrics.

My only experience was as an agency nurse for a short time. I evaluated patients through interviews as to their compliance and gave monthly injections. These patients had to feel comfortable to chat with me and for some reason they were. I also love psych is it so fascinating. The workings of the human mind, the perspectives of each person.

I just took Mental Health Nursing and absolutely loved it!! I had to interview clients, and know about psychotropic drugs. The mind is fascinating, and in my opinion controls the majority of the body's reaction to disease or illness. I also liked the fact that it wasn't a lot of lifting or physical assesstment. The priority focus is assessing the mind, and safety of the client.
